Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen meets US Speaker despite China’s warning Haqiqul Islam Khokon, US Senior Representative: Meets with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen despite China’s warnings Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy. They met in Los Angeles, California, USA on Wednesday (April 5). According to the news, Kevin McCarthy and Tsai Ing-wen sat in a closed-door meeting at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, 55 kilometers from Los Angeles. This marked the first time since 1979 that a top US official met with the president of Taiwan on US soil. At that time, McCarthy referred to the president of Taiwan as “one of America’s friends”. He also emphasized on Taiwan and the United States working together to maintain democracy, economic freedom, peace and stability. At a press conference after the meeting, McCarthy said that the United States will provide all kinds of assistance to Taiwan. Thanking McCarthy, Tsai Ing-wen said, “I feel delighted.” We are stronger when we are together. The US administration supports the one-China policy but maintains good relations with Taiwan. Washington is providing military-economic support to Taiwan. Even the largest part of Taiwan’s weapons comes from the United States. Last year, former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan’s capital Taipei, ignoring Beijing’s threats. In protest, the Chinese military conducted large-scale military exercises around the Taiwan Strait. This created a war situation with Taiwan of China.
